My first symptoms of fibroids and what I wished I knew..

I thought it was just hormones, but my body was telling me something much louder – I just didn’t know how to listen”

We often ignore signs from our bodies grouping them up as “hormones” or “growing pains”. But sometimes, those signs are signals to something deeper – like uterine fibroids.

“Uterine fibroids are known as “hormonally responsive” tumors, meaning their growth and spread is directly influenced by the reproductive hormones progesterone and estrogen.” ~ Womens health network, Uterine Fibroids

Heavy periods changed everything

The extremely heavy periods reshaped how I lived my life day-to-day life. Outings with family and friends were planned around my cycle, just to avoid the fear of having an “accident”.

During the first 3-4 days the flow would intensify dramatically – like an open tap. I was haemorrhaging. I was prescribed Tranexamic acid and the contraceptive pill, but neither made a difference.

Bowel and bladder disruption

Another symptom is Bowel and Bladder issues. I frequently felt like I’d drunk a litre of water and had to urinate urgently – even when I hadn’t. Constipation became a stressor too, severe enough that I needed suppositories.

Each time this happened, I knew my body was warning me. Blood tests revealed severe anaemia, and I ended up in A&E – sometimes needing 12- hour blood transfusions.

Pelvic pain and contractions

Pelvic and abdominal discomfort is another symptom I’ve experienced. The cramps often mimics contractions. Sometimes I’m doubled over unable to move or forced to lay down until the pain fades. I’ve even vomited from the intensity.

Emotional weight: Fatigue, Mood Swings and Anxiety

Low energy, fatigue, and mood swings became part of my everyday. Iron deficiency made working difficult. I noticed I’d become snappy, withdrawn, or anxious – not from stress, but from unspoken pain.

Types of fibroids and their symptoms

Here are a few points to look at relating to fibroids types and common symptoms:

Intramural – Inside the uterine wall

  • Heavy bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pressure

Submucosal – Just beneath the uterine lining

  • Very heavy bleeding
  • Fertility issues

Subserosal – Outside the uterus

  • Pressure on bladder or bowel
  • Bloating

Pedunculated – On a stalk inside or outside

  • Sharp pain (can twist)
  • Pressure

Finding strength in healing

This is just a glimpse into what I’m navigating. I’m staying hopeful and doing everything I can to heal – whether that’s through the best treatment options or holistic approaches.

I would love to hear your stories. Let’s create a space where women can feel seen and supported.
